Directorate of Rural Development Department Kashmir aims at developing the Rural Economy in terms of Infrastructure, Creation of durable Assets and generation of employment opportunities including creation of wage and self employment. The basic objectives of Rural Development Programmes have been alleviation of poverty and unemployment through creation of basic social and economic infrastructure, and providing employment to rural un-employed masses to discourage seasonal and permanent migration to urban areas.

Directorate of Rural Development Kashmir comprises of 10 districts in Kashmir Valley and 2 districts in Ladakh region. There are 168 CD Blocks.

The Directorate is under the administrative Control of the Rural Development Department at the Secretariat Level which is headed by an officer of the rank of Commissioner/Secretary to Government. At the provincial level, the Directorate is headed by the Director who is a major head of the Department in terms of Jammu & Kashmir Book of Financial Powers. He exercises the administrative and the financial control over the whole province and is assisted by Superintending Engineer REW Kashmir, Deputy Director (Administration), Deputy Director(Planning), District Panchayat Officer (Publicity), Block Development Officer (Headquarter) Accounts Officer and other necessary staff to carry out the day to day working in the Directorate.
